General Strike in the City of Bookan

HRANA- Certain Kurdish areas of Kurdistan go on general strike on February 20, 2011.

Based on reports received by Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), as much as 80 percent of shops have participated in a general strike in Bookan. There is a severe security atmosphere in the city.

Moreover, a group of youth in the city of Mehabad have organized a gathering at Esteqhlal square, chanting anti-regime slogans in spite a considerable presence of security forces in Mehabad.

It should be noted that people in the Kurdish areas had decided to form an all-out general strike on the occasion of the 7th day of mourning for the death of Saneh Jale, a Kurdish student of Art Academy in Tehran who was shot dead by security forces 25 Bahman demonstrations on Monday, February 14.

Mousavi’s Residence Converted into Prison, Iron Barrier Installed at Entrance

February 19th, 2011 – According to reports by a number of employees of the Office of the President and by patients and physicians at Shahid Hospital located near Akhtar street [the street where Mousavi's residence is also located], “Mir Hossein Mousavi and Zahra Rahnavard’s residence is being converted into a prison as agents proceed to install what looks like an iron barrier at the entrance of their residence.”

Concerns Mount as Opposition Leader and Wife’s House Arrest Continues, All Communication Shut Down

February 18th, 2011 – According to reports by Kalemeh, Mir Hossein Mousavi and Dr. Zahra Rahnavard’s house arrest that began during the February 14th, 2011 rallies [in support of the people of Egypt and Tunisia], have went into full force two days later. The limited communication with Mousavi and Rahnavard was cut off as of February 16th and there is currently absolutely no news regarding their well being. It is also worth mentioning that their bodyguards have now been dismissed and replaced with government security forces.

Saneh Jaleh’s Dream, Mohammad Mokhtari’s Facebook Status

It was not yet February 14th when Mohammad Mokhtari, 22, changed his Facebook profile picture. He uploaded the “25 Bahman” (February 14th) logo. Mohammad was going to the demonstration. He was tired and unhappy. In his last Facebook status, he wrote: “Oh God, please give me the honor to die on my feet, for I am tried of living seated and degraded”. Saneh Jaleh was a fine arts student. He had dreams. He was Kurdish. He wanted to serve his land like Bahman Qobadi [film director]. He also wanted to attend the protests.

Report of Protest in Isfahan

According to reports received by Human Rights and Democracy Activists in Iran, extensive pro-democracy demonstrations were formed in numerous locations in the city of Isfahan.

People were gathered in groups of hundreds at Chahar Bagheh Bala Street and Revolution Square, along with other locations around the city. Demonstrations continued till dawn.

The presence of the regime forces who attempted to suppress the gatherings was unprecedented for the city of Isfahan. There have been unconfirmed reports of nearly five-thousand government forces in Revolution Square and the surrounding areas. Government forces were reportedly showing great sensitivity toward the usage of mobile phones.

Pro-democracy demonstrators in Tehran, Arak, and Mashhad

Streets leading to Enghelab square (# 9 map below) filled with demonstrators

The following is report number 14 in the Kanoon about today’s protest in Iran. Its content has been submitted by journalists and the readers.

Tehran- In Jomhouri Street, people set a newsstand on fire. Due to the crackdown and attacks by the security forces, people took refuge in the side streets and alleys, and took advantage of any opportunity to come out and chant slogans.

Clashes erupted between the people and the security forces on Azadi street, and streets leading to Enghelab square are filled with angry demonstrators. People chant:

“Death to Khamenei”

“Death to Dictator”

“Khamenei should know this time he will be toppled”

“Mubarak, Bin-Ali, now it’s the turn of Seyyed Ali [Khamenei]“

Mashhad- Today, all the shops were ordered to shut down. The security forces severely beat up a young man at Rahnamyi three-way, while not letting people approach and dispersing the crowd. Rahnamyi street was shut down. At 19h00 local time, there are still people on the street, and it is quite busy. People have planned to protest by driving up and down Rahnamyi and Ahmadabad street to honk their cars’ horns.

Arak- In the city of Arak (central Iran), a group of 500 gathered between the Malek-Abbass Abad three way and Shohada Square. The slogans chanted by the protesters were “Allaho Akbar (God is Great)” and “Death to Dictator”. At 19h00, tear gas was used and the crowd dispersed.

Protesters attacked and shot in Shiraz

Based on reports received by Human Rights and Democracy Activists in Iran, security forces have attacked the crowd of protesters in Shiraz. Shots were heard on Eram street, Namazi street and Setad Square. Many ambulances are moving in and out to transfer the wounded.

The students at Engineering Faculty of Shiraz University staged a large protest and entered Namazi street. Citizens joined in. Other protests were staged at Setad Square, Molasadra and Eram streets. People were marching and chanting slogans like “Death to the dictator”.

Around 6:30pm, security forces attacked the protesters and beat them with batons; however, when they were unable to disperse the crowd, they fired shots into the air. Some unconfirmed reports indicate that security forces opened fire on the protesters, which resulted in the injury of some people. Following the reported shooting, ambulances left the city’s hospital located in Paramount to the location of the shooting.

Meanwhile, the security of the Eram Student dormitory (of Shiraz University) prevented students from leaving the dorm and threatened them to not take part in the protests.

A large number of security forces surrounded the areas where protests were being held and tried to disperse the crowd. However, people continued their protests and fought back. Some of the students were beaten by the forces and some have been arrested.

The protests still continue. More reports will be provided once available.

Follow up report on death of protester and injuries of two others

The gunshots of cold pistol weapons fired by security forces riding motorcycles are reportedly the reason for the death of one protester and the injury of two others.

Following the gunshots, protesters stopped the perpetrators by disarming them and setting their motorcycles on fire.

Routes leading to Azadi Square have been blocked by security forces in an effort to disperse the crowd.

Kaleme Report on Protests

5:30pm- A crowd moved from Enghelab Square to Azadi Square. Clashes occurred. Around 500-600 police forces were stationed at the Ministry of Labour and Transportation parking lot, at the Rudaki intersection. The forces clashed with the crowd who had come from Tohid Street to Azadi Street.

Plainclothes forces and people holding batons beat citizens and forced them onto Setarekhan Street and Azerbaijan Street. Passed the Ministry of Labour, heavy clashes occurred between plainclothes forces and citizens. Protesters chanted “Death to the dictator” and “Honourable people, support, support”.

Tear gas was dispersed in the air at Azadi Square. Residents threw newspapers to the protesters from their window buildings to suppress the effects of tear gas.

BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) buses have blocked the side streets so that the protesters get cornered by the police force. Many people inside the BRT buses were chanting. The police force took some of the women out of the bus and beat them.

5:45pm - At Vali-Asr Street and Rasht Street, by the Art Academy, plainclothes forces clashed with citizens. People with bloodied faces continued to chant “Death to the dictator”.

6:00pm - Most of the clashes occurred at Azadi Square and the surrounding streets. The people in this area chanted, “Death to the dictator, whether in Cairo or Tehran”, “Allah O Akbar”, and “Ya Hossein Mir Hossein”.

6:30pm - According to Kaleme, the protests at Enghelab Street reached the millions. Now, scattered protesters are still present and chanting.

According to unconfrmed reports, arrests in the hundreds was reported in Tehran. Also, some regime supporters chanted at Enghelab Street.

A main chant from today’s protest was, “Dictator, shame. Let’s free the nation”.

Chants of “Long live Iranian Republic”, Gathering in Imam Hossein Square

Chants of death to dictator and “Long live Iranian Republic” heard in Imam Hossein Square (#17 map below)

Tehran- Large numbers of youth in Imam Hossein Square gathered while chanting “death to the dictator” and “long live the Iranian Republic”.

Tehran- In Enghelab Square, [security forces] have shut down some of the bookstores. They are not allowing people to leave the malls. They have also prevented merchants from leaving their shops until the crowd outside disperses.

Tehran- New clashes have erupted on Azadi Street between the police and protesters.

Isfahan- In Enghelab Square and the streets around Chaharbagh, large crowds have gathered on both sides of Si-o-Seh Pol Bridge. Many security forces have been stationed in the area and have been making arrests.

Chants of “Death to Dictator”, report on clashes

In Vali-Asr Square (#15 in map below), people and security forces continue to clash. The Special Unit forced attacked and beat people up. People reacted by using sticks and stones.

Chants of “Death to Dictator” and “Death to Khamenei” are heard.

Clashes have also erupted between people and security forces in the intersection of Jamalzadeh Street and Fatemi Street(#12), and in front of the Ministry of Labour on Azadi Street (#16).

On Abureyhan Street (across Enghelab street) people chanted “Police forces, support people”. They threw flowers at the police. One of the police forces waved his hands for the protesters. At one point along the road, the police moved aside letting people to pass through.

Updates from Tehran, 5:20pm-5:40pm

5:44pm – Mobile reception and text message services have been cut off around Enghelab Square.

5:36pm - Plainclothes agents have been detaining demonstrators. HRANA has thus far reported the arrest of 10 demonstrators.

5:33pm - Amongst the slogans that could be heard in the streets of Tehran, demonstrators chant, “Don’t be afraid, don’t be afraid, Egypt was also like this.”

5:28pm - Anti-riot forces clash with demonstrators in North Eskandari Street. According to eyewitnesses, anti-riot forces are attempting to disperse the crowed by tear gas and there is a heavy presence of plainclothes agents.

5:21pm – Eyewitness reports: around 5,000 people were present at Jamal Azad Street. Initially it was quite, but after anti-riot forces attacked to disperse the crowd, people began chanting “Death to Dictator”. Anti-riot forces have resorted to violence but they did not detain anyone.
