February 24th, 2011 – Without any news regarding their parents, Mousavi and Rahnavard’s children write a letter describing the pain and suffering they have endured over the past two weeks. In this letter, they explain that the last telephone conversation with their parents took place on the afternoon of February 14th, 2011 [25 Bahman 1389]. Since then, despite daily visits to Akhtar street where their parents live, in order to inquire about their well being, they have experience nothing but insults, aggressiveness, profanities and defiance.

In their letter of complaint, Mousavi and Rahnavard’s daughters write that when inquiring about the whereabouts of their parents from the agents deployed around their house, they were told that it is none of their business. When they asked what judicial warrant their parents’ house arrest was based on, they were also told that it is none of their business.

Mousavi’s daughters further explain that in recent days, a second long iron gate has been installed behind the first iron barrier that was recently built at the entrance of Akhtar street. The entrance to Mousavi’s house is now guarded through two iron barriers and it appears as though the lights at their parents’ residence are always off.

While reiterating that they have no news regarding the living conditions, nutrition and well being of their parents and are no longer able to enter Akhtar street, Mousavi and Rahnavard’s children write: “There was a time when we considered Pasteur and Akhtar street as our primary home, filled with simplicity, kindness, tranquility and respect. About 1100 meters long, it was hardly a castle, but a lovable, old home filled with flowers and trees planted by a father who was a poet and painter at heart; a house in which my father’s Quran was placed on his prayer rug filled with the perfume of Kaaba; a house filled with my mother’s love, passion and hustle and bustle. Today, Pasteur and Akhtar street have been enclosed behind iron barriers; and no one is aware of what is going on behind these illegal barriers.”

Mousavi’s daughters demand: “What have they done except to seek justice? Why were they responded to with disrespect and insolence? Is this the response to our father’s tireless efforts during the 8 year war he fought during his youth. Is this what we call compassion for a middle aged and aging man? Life is so cruel and forgetful! Our parents are one of many mothers and fathers who have long demanded their rights only to be responded to in such a cowardly fashion. The bullets and whips tell the full and controversial story of our pain and sorrow.

According to Kaleme, the full content of this letter is as follows:

In the name of justice,

We saw our mother and father for the last time two weeks ago. We were sitting together and though the customary delight of being together had been corroded by the years of pain and sorrow, we nevertheless felt the love of our parents so deeply that it would have been hard to believe that only three days later we would be denied of their love.

We heard my mother’s voice by phone for the last time on the afternoon of February 14th, 2011 [25 Bahman 1389]. A van was blocking the entrance to Akhtar street. We assumed that it would be temporary. It never occurred to us that we would have to stand behind a gate for 13 days longing to hear their voices or find out if they are alive and well. Instead we faced a gate that never opened and lights that never turned on….

We went to visit with them last week. The van was parked so as to make it impossible for anything or anyone to enter the street. The entrance was completely blocked. The men coming out of the van were wearing masks and chewing gum. When we inquired as to what judicial indictment deprived children of the right to see their parents they insolently responded: “It is none of your business if we have a judgment, who ordered the judgment and where it came from.” We asked them how many individuals were in the van and they once again responded: “It is none of your business.” We asked why the windows of the van were tinted and yet again the same response: “It is none of your business.”

Was it really our business where our parents were? In a period of 72 hours, we had turned into strangers leaning on a van. Afternoon arrived as the men in masks watched us. They stared at us defiantly without answering any questions. When darkness approached the lights did not turn on. The house only became darker, with no sign of life, complete silence, not even a garbage bag at the door step of the residence.

They had even dismissed the bodyguards. We left, a few men following us from the beginning of Akhtar, to Farvardin and Pasteur street . They were so close to us that they probably heard our voices.

The next night was returned. This time they stopped us from entering at the entrance of Khorshid street. Their response to our statement that every worried child has a right to inquire about their parents was either silence or insolence.

It was raining on Pasteur street, the only light emanating from the electric welding machine that was welding a dark, iron barrier as dark as our days, at the entrance to Akhtar street. We walked on the opposite sidewalk to get a glimpse of what was going on, but were stopped by two men. They insulted us. They told us “you attacked for over a year and now it is our turn.” The men were once again masked. In addition to the van, they were welding a large iron gate, worse than the iron barrier at the entrance of the street.

They told us that our parents deserved this, but we weren’t interested in having political discussions. We were only there as concerned children. They told us that they were glad they killed people this past year. “We killed them because they were worthless”, they said. As we heard their statements the faces of Neda, Sohrab and Mohsen and so many others faces of our beloved colleagues smeared with blood appeared in front of our eyes. We kept hearing the moans of morning mothers. Who was this person who claimed that those he killed were worthless? He said: “Allah said even your cries are lies.” He went on and on and showed us his weapon and asked us to leave. When we insisted on a reason he replied: “We will call in the security forces and have you all removed by force.” It felt as though the bare trees in that long street were shouting “What are they guilty of? ” They shouted that the girls of the land of water and fire have been taught by their parents to never fear.

The kids were impatient. The two year old wanted to run the short distance between Khorshid and Akhtar street as customary, shouting out his grandfather’s name, awaiting his innocent smile and warm, kind embrace. The seven year old stood in a corner crying, his eyes filled with nostalgia. Their cameras were taking constant pictures of this scene, as though even our children were included in the list of enemies to be taken to their offices to be threatened some day.

There was no sign of lights in the house, no sign of life to give us hope that our mother and father were still there. Although unjustly under house arrest… speaking of justice…. these days are so difficult to bear.

We informed the agents who stopped us from entering the street that all we wanted was to walk to the end of the street. They replied: “What is the point of seeing the end of the street? Seeing the street is meaningless.” We insisted that Akhtar street is where our parents live, where we live. This street symbolizes our mother’s tireless steps exhausted with pain; it is a street that belongs to a father whose heart beats for the children of Iran. To us this street symbolizes all that is secure and safe. It is heaven. It smells like God. It smells of the Jasmine flowers next to our father’s prayer rug. It represents our common pain…

That bitter and dark night finally passed… At that moment, we didn’t even curse them, as God was witness to their behavior. God was witness to their injustice and irrationality. God was witness to our anxious and beating hearts. God was witness to the restlessness of our young children in the cold, winter night.

For two nights, our hands tied, not knowing who to turn to, we headed towards Pasteur street at midnight. They had installed a massive, black gate at the entrance of the street. There was a small compartment that was closed and locked from the outside. From a corner we could see three cars parked inside the street. After knocking on the door for a long period of time a man wearing a mask asked us what we wanted. All we wanted was news about our parents, a sign that they were still in their house, that they were in good health. We wanted to know if they were being fed and whether the food they were receiving was safe; but all we were left with were years of bitter experiences and a series of disturbing events.

They didn’t provide us with a response. They once again threatened to call the police to remove us from the area. They insulted and remained silent. We demanded: “Would you be behaving this way if they were your own parents? What have they done, except to fight for justice? Must they be responded to with insolence and disrespect? Is this the response to our father’s tireless efforts during the 8 year war he fought during his youth. Is this what we call compassion for a middle aged and aging man? Life is so cruel and forgetful! Our parents are one of many mothers and fathers who have long demanded their rights only to be responded to in such a cowardly fashion. The bullets and whips tell the full and controversial story of our pain and sorrow.

We went to Pasteur street once again with the hope to find out about our mother and father’s well being. This time they had even covered the small holes in the iron gate with a metal sheet. This time they didn’t even allow us to enter the street. They told us that they have orders to make sure that Mousavi’s family does not enter Pasteur street. Is this justice? Justice… such an meek word… even more oppressed that the mourning families of our martyrs and the concerned hearts of the families of those unjustly imprisoned.

After insisting, we finally entered the street and looked into the street through the half centimeter opening. They had installed a large iron door behind the first black gate. What was all this fear and conspiracy all about? Why so many iron gates and locks? Who did these masked men get their orders from? Who gave them permission to hide our mother and father behind these dark iron doors? What have they done with the sunshine of our lives? Had the security officers whose identity was unknown settled into our father’s small office? Had they seized his office? Had they taken over his house? Why were they denying their children, grandchildren and grooms the right to meet with them or obtain any news about their well being?

They had no judicial warrant. There was no transparency. They had no respect, not that we expected those who put our parents under house arrest to respect us. Our parents were denied the basic rights of every citizen, to ensure their well being and provide transparency regarding their meals and medication. They didn’t even have the courage to inform us where they get their orders from. They didn’t have the courage to remove their masks to face the children of the two innocents they have put under house arrest. There was a time when we considered Pasteur and Akhtar street our primary home, filled with simplicity, kindness, tranquility and respect. About 1100 meters long, it was hardly a castle, but a lovable old home filled with flowers and trees planted by a father who was a poet and painter at heart; a house in which my father’s Quran was placed on his prayer rug filled with the perfume of Kaaba; a house filled with my mother’s love, passion and hustle and bustle. Today Pasteur and Akhtar street have been enclosed behind iron barriers and no one is aware of what is going on behind these illegal barriers.

We are fully aware that our mother and father were not tried in a competent court. We are fully aware that our parents have committed no crime. We know that the fact that they have installed two large metal gates at the entrance to their street is not good news. We also know that when the lights don’t turn on it is also not good news.

It has been two weeks since we last saw our parents. During this time we have heard nothing but insults and profanities. We have faced cold and heartless gazes, not sure who to turn to and if anyone hears our cries…

We are only sure of one thing, that God is our innocent companion.

February 23, 2011 - Following the raid of Mehdi Karroubi’s residence by security forces two days ago, in which Mehdi Karroubi and his wife Fatemeh were locked in different rooms while their house was searched and books and documents were confiscated, the latest reports point to the fact that security agents are now deployed inside the building and have cleared the street. According to Saham News, as of this morning, intelligence agents have now transferred their vehicles and equipment inside their property and completely occupied the building. It is also being reported that as of 10 days ago, all necessities for Karroubi and his wife are being provided by security forces, a development of concern, given similar cases in the past in which physical elimination [of the individual] has been the direct objective.

In light of the fact that Karroubi and his wife were in perfect health prior to their house arrest, in a letter addressed to the authorities, Karroubi’s family stated that they will hold government officials responsible for any incident occurring as a result of food and other items being provided to Karroubi and his wife by intelligence officers.

Since Mehdi Karroubi’s children have not been allowed to provide any necessities to their parents in the past two weeks and even the fruit delivered by one of their children was rejected by security forces, Karroubi’s children have explicitly warned government officials, security forces, and intelligence agents against carrying out any plans designed to physically eliminate Mehdi Karroubi and his wife Fatemeh Karroubi, declaring that the consequences of such actions will only further damage this regime.

Persian Report by JARAS | Interview by Masih Alinejad
Translation by Tour Irani | Edited by Persian2English

JARAS – My brother loved freedom. He loved life. He was tired [of the actions of Iran government] and participated in Feb. 14th demonstration like many other youngsters just to say that he loved his country. Now neither myself, nor any of my family members, can believe that Mohammad is no longer with us. This is so cruel when we see that those who had no relation to my brother stole his coffin.

These are excerpts by a family member of Mohammad Mokhtari, a 22-year-old who was shot on Feb 14th during a demonstration and subsequently lost his life. After his death, due to security pressures his family has refrained from speaking to the media but Majid Mokhtari has said that he cannot hold back anymore.

Majid Mokhtari is the brother of Mohammad Mokhtari. He had to be hospitalized after hearing of his brother’s death. Now after days of shock and not feeling well, he came online and was greatly upset when he saw the published pictures of Mohammad Mokhtari’s funeral procession in state media.

He tells JARAS in a phone interview: “It’s like someone is telling me a story. A story about a brother who loved life. But he was killed and someone is trying to change his story. And it is painful to see the lifeless body of my brother on the shoulders of people whose faces are not at all familiar to me, his brother.”

State media had reported that the “revolutionary people” buried the body of Mohammad Mokhtari while chanting slogans against “sedition” leaders and that he was killed by [People's Mojehedin Organization of Iran] elements! They did not even point out his true identity and Mohammad Mokhtari’s latest entry on his Facebook page which read: “Oh God, please give me the honor to die on my feet, for I am tired of living seated and humiliated.” As such, the bodies of two people who were killed during February 14th demonstrations in Tehran have been stolen by plain clothes thugs and have been buried under the watchful eyes of state security.

Regime supporters have done a similar thing with Saneh Jaleh, the other youngster who was killed on Feb. 14th. He was reported by state news agency, Fars News as a having been a “Basij member” (they issued him a fake Basij Membership Card) and similar funeral processions were held for him.

Majid Mokhtari, the brother of Mohammad Mokhtari, has started speaking for the first time:

When did you first hear about the death of your brother Mohammad Mokhtari?

I live away from Iran and follow the news through the internet. I went out on February 14th. When I returned home, I talked with a friend of mine in Iran through Skype and asked him what was going in Iran. I also followed the news myself through the internet, but I still had no idea. The next morning, I went to the university. I was sitting in a classroom and I kept receiving text messages from friends. They kept asking me how I was feeling. This was strange to me. I even received a text message from my uncle asking me where I was. I still didn’t know why everyone was asking me how I was. Then I noticed a few of my Iranian friends came to the university. I asked them what was going on and they told me that they have just come to the take me out for a walk for no particular reason. While walking, I was also checking my Facebook pages. All of a sudden, I read a message from a Facebook friend who asked me if ‘I was related to the martyr Mohammad Mokhtari?’ Suddenly the Earth shook under my feet and I lost the ability to walk. My friends noticed my condition and held me by my arms and they kept asking if something was wrong! I asked them if they knew anything! ‘Has anything happened to my brother Mohammad?’ After that, I don’t know what happened. My blood pressure went down. It was an incredible shock. It’s not easy to hear the news about your brother’s death, especially when you are so far away. It immobilizes you. I was hospitalized since last Tuesday, and I still cannot believe the news is real.

When was the last time you talked to Mohammad?

A few days before February 14th, I was in contact with my brother through Facebook. A week prior, we talked over Skype. My brother was sitting next to my father and mother, when I asked him about the latest news, he was trying hard to hide the fact from my parents that he was going to go to the demonstrations. He did not want to worry them. Mohammad was a very humorous man. I talked to my mother after his death. She also cannot believe that Mohammad is gone. My mother was saying that on February 14th she had jokingly told Mohammad: “let sit and have our last lunch together.” My brother went out to the demonstrations, laughing and full of humor, and never returned.

How do you feel when you see the pictures of the funeral procession of your brother and is the picture of a middle-aged man crying of your father?

In the beginning, the doctors would not allow me to see the pictures in the hospital, but later when I finally saw them I broke down. Yes, I saw the picture of my father who was hugging another friend of Mohammad’s and crying. But I don’t know the rest of the people who were carrying the coffin. Who are these bearded and strange-looking people burying my brother? It’s very painful. I looked through all the pictures to see at least a few people with whom my brother had spent time in his life but their numbers were very limited. I don’t know what to say. This is very cruel that first they kill Mohammad and then they don’t even let us to freely cry for him. I hear that they tell families of martyrs things like: “you have two other sons, so you should be careful about what you say and how you act regarding Mohammad’s death”. Is this justice? There is no reason to kill an innocent person in broad daylight and then when this happens, in order to relieve our own conscience, we say that ‘he wanted to join his friends!’ No! He wanted freedom… He was tired of this country… Everybody was tired…

Would you tell me about Mohammad a little? What were some of the things he liked? What dreams did he have?

I had recently won the United States Green Card lottery. Mohammad had set all his hopes on me and wanted me to get him out of Iran someday. He wanted to live freely. Now everyone is trying to console me saying that Mohammad met his fate. But I don’t know. He loved sports and music. He loved life. He loved freedom… I cannot believe that all this love is gone. He used to always tell me: “Majid why have you lost so much weight? You should go to a sports club and take care of yourself.” He himself was always into sports. He loved singing. He was very lively. He was full of life. I used to get emotional and tell him: “They [Iranian regime] have killed so many people in the demonstrations”. I used to worry for him. But Mohammad was very active on the internet. He had even changed his Facebook profile picture to the poster for February 14th demonstration. And anyone searching for his name on Facebook, would find him with a green wristband and therefore the regime was not able to issue him a fake “Basij Membership Card”.

When did you last contact your family and how is their emotional state?

They are worried. They have lost a dear one. They cannot talk freely and they keep changing the subject. I want to know how they [Iranian regime] killed my brother. I have heard two different stories. One said that he had a gunshot wound on his head but the other story says that a bullet hit his shoulder area, he fell, got up, tried to move, but fell again. As a brother, it’s natural for me to want to know which story is true. But whenever I ask my family, they are very careful in responding and prefer not to talk about it. I believe that when they warned my family about their other two sons, this was in fact a threat.

What’s your most important memory of Mohammad?

All brothers fight at some point. I remember when Mohammad had just lost his best friend, Rouzbeh, he had turned much more sensitive. Therefore when we got in fights, I used to go make up with him quickly. I loved him so much that I could not bear seeing him hurt. Mohammad and I were not just two brothers. We were friends. We shared a lot. Losing Rouzbeh had really affected him in a negative way. Here, being away from Iran, when I saw a picture of the tombstone of Mohammad, I also saw Rouzbeh’s grave next to his. It’s so difficult to see that my brother with all his life dreams is now buried.

What would you like to say to the officials?

I just cannot say anything. It’s painful. It is the highest level of cruelty to try to change someone’s life story! To try to change the identity of the murderer and to try to show things in your own favor, when I see them do these things and how they quickly pick up the coffin and gather around it and wrap it with the Islamic Republic flag, it’s nauseating. I cannot believe that they do these things. I really don’t know how they are going to justify their actions later. This lie is not even the type of lie that Ahmadinejad often tells. This lie is like, you know who the murderer is and you are still lying. You are turning everything around 180 degrees right in front of people’s eyes. The whole process was controlled. What can I say. Mohammad loved life. He didn’t deserve to be killed.

February 22, 2011 – Today at 11:30am, Shiraz University students attended a rally at Pardis square, but university basij and security forces were mobilized and the scene turned violent. According to HRANA, there were over hundreds of students all calling for a reponse from the authorities of Shiraz University for Shiraz University student Hamed Nourmohammadi who lost his life.

These students protested, despite the heavy presence of security forces, police, and basij at Shiraz University who had attempted to prevent their demonstrations. It is mentioned that security forces and basij attacked Shiraz University students during their protest and it turned violent [at the hands of security forces]. This is while Shiraz University students have announced that they will protest again tomorrow.

This is has caused the security forces, police, and basij at Shiraz University to be on high alert and have tightened control of students entering and exiting Shiraz University. Security forces have also summoned, intimidated, and fined some of the students.

Daneshjoo News — During the course of February 20th protests in Shiraz, one of Shiraz University’s students, Hamed Nourmohammadi, was killed by security forces.

According to Daneshjoo News, Hamed Nourmohammadi, a Shiraz University Biology student, who was from Khorramabad residing in Dastgheyb dormitory, was killed yesterday in Namazi Square in front of Engineering building No.1 while he was running away from basij and security forces. Based on eyewitness accounts, Hamed Nourmohammadi was thrown off a bridge between Daneshjoo and Namazi square by security forces. He was then hit by the cars on the lower street (Saheli Street) and lost his life.

This news is reported while a heavy security climate is reigning over Shiraz University. Some of the student activists have been banned from entering the dormitories and campus. In some cases, the families of these students have been contacted and threatened. Moreover, last night at 10:00 pm, and for a duration of 15 minutes, chants of “Allaho Akbar” (God is Great) and “Death to the Dictator” reverberated across the Mofateh Dormitory of the University of Shiraz.

I am a friend of Hamed and come from the same town
Hamed is from Alashtar (Namazi Bridge also in Lorestan province), not Khorramabad
My hand is trembling
You mean Hamed?
They killed our Hamed
Hamed I salute you
I salute your sense of honor
[...]
Hamed was a true Green
A true patriot
He loved the sunset over Persepolis
That’s why he chose Shiraz University (Shiraz is close to the ancient Persian capital of Persepolis)
My Hamed, your friends and I will continue on your path
I can’t believe it
Just a week ago you said, “I’m off to Shiraz, let me take a photo of you”.

A number of plainclothes, Basij, police, and anti-riot forces in the streets of Tehran are estimated to be more than last week’s protest.

Kaleme reports that a few hundred security and military forces are present at Fatemi Square and Fatemi Street, shoulder to shoulder with each other, and they are not letting anybody gather. The north side of Fatemi Square is completely controlled by police and the south side of the street is dominated by plainclothes forces.

Kaleme reporters compared today’s atmosphere in Tehran with June 20, 2009. People from all ages, from teenagers to senior citizens, are countering oppressive forces.

Today a new group of Revolutionary Guards, with uniforms never seen before, are present in the streets of Tehran.

Security and police forces are aimleslly moving among people, sometimes checking people’s ID cards on Vali-Asr Street, around Motahari Street to Valiasr Square, Jomhouri Street and Vali-Asr crossroads.

The latest reports indicate that gatherings toward Enqelab and Jamalzadeh are forming.

Minutes after a gathering was formed in Haft-e Tir Square, security forces opened fire on the people.

According to Daneshjoo News, one protester has been killed in Haft-e Tir Square after being shot by security forces armed with hand guns. Additionally, several other protesters have been injured as a result of clashes on Haft-e Tir Square.

One of the eyewitnesses told Daneshjoo News, the injuries sustained by the person shot was so much that (s)he lost his/her life within minutes of being shot. Meanwhile, BBC has reported that an eyewitness has heard gunshots around Abbas Abad Street of Tehran.

Since this morning, special guard units and police forces accompanied by the Basij militia who are equipped with cold and live weapons. They are stationed in Tehran’s major squares to prevent the gathering of any protest gathering. However, in some parts of Tehran like Vali-Asr Square (#15 on the map), Haft-e Tir Square, Vanak Square (#21 on the map), and in front of Mellat Park (#22 on the map), people have gathered and chanted slogans against the regime.

Various Islamic Republic officials have warned in recent days that any gathering will be dealt with harshly. Fars News Agency published a news article this morning announcing that people will be killed by the Islamic Republic’s opposition. Despite all these, numerous reports from various cities like Isfahan, Shiraz, Mahabad, Sanandaj, Rasht, etc. indicate protesters have showed up and held rallies.

In Tehran, reports indicate that clashes have erupted in Enghelab Square between people and security forces. There are also reports of a large crowd gathered around Vanak Square and Mellat Park.

The heavy presence of anti-riot forces has been reported from downtown Tehran. It is reported that some clashes occurred until 4:00pm Tehran time.
RFI has reminded its readers that foreign media representatives are not allowed to be present at demonstrations.

Around 4:00pm Tehran time, eyewitnesses in Vali-Asr Square and Keshavar Blvd reported crowds have gathered and tear gas was fired.

The Saham News website, which has ties to Mehdi Karroubi, reported on the growing number of protesters in Isfahan. It wrote, “Many of the protesters have gathered in groups of a few dozens and sporadically chanted slogans”. Saham News also reported that “around Vanak Square and Mellat Park in Tehran, a large crowd of protesters have gathered. Plainclothes forces on motorcycles are maneuvering around Vanak Square and chanting slogans like “Hezbollah Mashallah”.

Reports of sporadic protests in the cities of Mahabad and Shiraz

Based on various reports, it seems Vali-Asr square is the busiest location in Tehran. Some of the opposition websites claim “anti-riot forces have pulled back to side streets from Vali-Asr Square”, and that the square “has fallen into the hands of the people”.

It must be emphasized that none of these reports are 100% reliable and they cannot be verified with certainty.
