Follow up report on death of protester and injuries of two others

The gunshots of cold pistol weapons fired by security forces riding motorcycles are reportedly the reason for the death of one protester and the injury of two others.

Following the gunshots, protesters stopped the perpetrators by disarming them and setting their motorcycles on fire.

Routes leading to Azadi Square have been blocked by security forces in an effort to disperse the crowd.

Kaleme Report on Protests

5:30pm- A crowd moved from Enghelab Square to Azadi Square. Clashes occurred. Around 500-600 police forces were stationed at the Ministry of Labour and Transportation parking lot, at the Rudaki intersection. The forces clashed with the crowd who had come from Tohid Street to Azadi Street.

Plainclothes forces and people holding batons beat citizens and forced them onto Setarekhan Street and Azerbaijan Street. Passed the Ministry of Labour, heavy clashes occurred between plainclothes forces and citizens. Protesters chanted “Death to the dictator” and “Honourable people, support, support”.

Tear gas was dispersed in the air at Azadi Square. Residents threw newspapers to the protesters from their window buildings to suppress the effects of tear gas.

BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) buses have blocked the side streets so that the protesters get cornered by the police force. Many people inside the BRT buses were chanting. The police force took some of the women out of the bus and beat them.

5:45pm - At Vali-Asr Street and Rasht Street, by the Art Academy, plainclothes forces clashed with citizens. People with bloodied faces continued to chant “Death to the dictator”.

6:00pm - Most of the clashes occurred at Azadi Square and the surrounding streets. The people in this area chanted, “Death to the dictator, whether in Cairo or Tehran”, “Allah O Akbar”, and “Ya Hossein Mir Hossein”.

6:30pm - According to Kaleme, the protests at Enghelab Street reached the millions. Now, scattered protesters are still present and chanting.

According to unconfrmed reports, arrests in the hundreds was reported in Tehran. Also, some regime supporters chanted at Enghelab Street.

A main chant from today’s protest was, “Dictator, shame. Let’s free the nation”.

Chants of “Long live Iranian Republic”, Gathering in Imam Hossein Square

Chants of death to dictator and “Long live Iranian Republic” heard in Imam Hossein Square (#17 map below)

Tehran- Large numbers of youth in Imam Hossein Square gathered while chanting “death to the dictator” and “long live the Iranian Republic”.

Tehran- In Enghelab Square, [security forces] have shut down some of the bookstores. They are not allowing people to leave the malls. They have also prevented merchants from leaving their shops until the crowd outside disperses.

Tehran- New clashes have erupted on Azadi Street between the police and protesters.

Isfahan- In Enghelab Square and the streets around Chaharbagh, large crowds have gathered on both sides of Si-o-Seh Pol Bridge. Many security forces have been stationed in the area and have been making arrests.

Chants of “Death to Dictator”, report on clashes

In Vali-Asr Square (#15 in map below), people and security forces continue to clash. The Special Unit forced attacked and beat people up. People reacted by using sticks and stones.

Chants of “Death to Dictator” and “Death to Khamenei” are heard.

Clashes have also erupted between people and security forces in the intersection of Jamalzadeh Street and Fatemi Street(#12), and in front of the Ministry of Labour on Azadi Street (#16).

On Abureyhan Street (across Enghelab street) people chanted “Police forces, support people”. They threw flowers at the police. One of the police forces waved his hands for the protesters. At one point along the road, the police moved aside letting people to pass through.

Updates from Tehran, 5:20pm-5:40pm

5:44pm – Mobile reception and text message services have been cut off around Enghelab Square.

5:36pm - Plainclothes agents have been detaining demonstrators. HRANA has thus far reported the arrest of 10 demonstrators.

5:33pm - Amongst the slogans that could be heard in the streets of Tehran, demonstrators chant, “Don’t be afraid, don’t be afraid, Egypt was also like this.”

5:28pm - Anti-riot forces clash with demonstrators in North Eskandari Street. According to eyewitnesses, anti-riot forces are attempting to disperse the crowed by tear gas and there is a heavy presence of plainclothes agents.

5:21pm – Eyewitness reports: around 5,000 people were present at Jamal Azad Street. Initially it was quite, but after anti-riot forces attacked to disperse the crowd, people began chanting “Death to Dictator”. Anti-riot forces have resorted to violence but they did not detain anyone.

Protester shot and killed, 250 others detained

Security forces violently clashed with protestors and fired bullets between Rudaki Avenue and Tohid Square, to Azadi Street.

According to reports one protester was shot and killed, and two were injured.

250 other protesters have reportedly been detained by security forces and transferred to an unidentified location.

Nearly 10 people arrested in peaceful protests

The citizens arrested by security forces and Revolutionary Guards around Enghelab Square have reportedly been beaten before their arrests.

According to RAHANA reporters, violent clashes have formed between the people and Revolutionary Guards and security forces.

Uniformed and plainclothes security forces are severely beating people on the sidewalks and streets surrounding Enghelab Square. Several citizens have been severely injured.

Protesters on 16 Azar, Jamalzadeh, Rudaki, and Haft TIz squares, Somaieh and Eskandari streets, and under College bridge have been severely beaten.

Tear gas has been dispersed at Revolution Square.

Many people have joined the protests surrounding Enghelab Square. Streets leading to Azadi Square are chanting opposition slogans.

Eyewitness reports on clashes in Tehran

5:00pm (Tehran Time)- Some of the reports from Tehran indicate that tear gas has been used to disperse the crowd. An eyewitness told Radio Zamaneh that moments ago a sound resembling firing of plastic bullets was heard.

4:36pm - An eyewitness told Radio Zamaneh moments ago that “[Security forces] are beating people severely. The number of the protesters is on the rise. In Vali Asr Street, Vali Asr intersection (#4 in the MAP below), and Vali Asr Square, and Rasht street (#13), clashes have been erupted after security forces attacked and beat up the protesters”, he added, “the agents on motorbikes attack people on the sidewalks. Chants of death to dictator are heard”.

This eyewitness also reports that some of the protesters have been wounded. Moreover, the number of police forces is very high, and they are stationed at all intersections. At Laleh Park(#14), 200-300 in full gear have been stationed.

Police vehicles, black vans, and vans equipped with cages are seen on the streets. This eyewitness also reports that the police forces are stationed at major squares, and plain cloth agents monitor the side streets and alleys where they pursue the people.

People determined to demonstrate despite brutal response by police forces

The police has responded brutally to people’s protests.

Tehran- On Somayeh Street, a gathering of people was confronted by security forces.

Tehran – An eyewitness said: A large number of people are demonstrating in the Imam Hossein To Ferdowsi corridor and their number is increasing every minute. If it continues like this, we will reach one million people soon. Slogans include Death to Khamenei and Death to Dictator. The people are really angry.

One of the forces from Tehran said: A large number of people are gathered on the Enqelab Avenue and Valiasr intersection. People are shouting “Death to Dictator”. The police is attacking the people.

Tehran - Clahses around 3:30 pm were high on Jamalzadeh Street. Police forces arrested protesters and put them inside vehicles. A large crowd is moving from Enqelab Square to Azadi Square.

Kerman – There was a gathering of 300 people with a large number of police forces present.

Police forces have beaten people badly and there have been some casualties. Police forces are raiding internet cafes.

Shiraz - Clashes reported. People determined to demonstrate despite the brutal response of police forces.

Large clashes in streets leading to Enqelab and Azadi

As the number of people gathered for protest increases, security and plainclothes forces have begun attacking the protesters.

From Tehran, reports indicate sporadic clashes in Fatemi Square to Azadi Avenue, Jomhoori Avenue and all streets around the University of Tehran.

More than 100 thousand protesters have formed a large gathering and are moving from Enqelab Avenue to Azadi Square.

Azadi Square have been closed by security and police forces.

Tear gas has been fired by riot police in streets like 16 Azar and Roodaki.

Also HRANA reports the arrest of dozens of people.

Security forces on Vali-Asr Avenue are removing license plates from vehicles.

Metro trains are not stopping in Imam Hossein, Vali Asr, Azadi, Navab, Ferdowsi and Enqelab squares.

Security forces resort to firearms to disperse protesters

According to reports by HRANA, the atmosphere reigning over the protest is quite tense and flammable. Plainclothes forces are using paint ball guns to disperse the crowd between Vali-Asr and Enghelab squares (#4 and #9 on the MAP link).

 

The forces attacked people despite the fact that the rally was peaceful, and people were only chanting “Death to dictator” and “Allah Akbar”(God is great).

 

In other reports, security forces have fired shots into the air in Ferdowsi square.

 

The presence of people in the roads leading to Enghelab Square is to the extent that the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lines are unable to move.

 

Reports indicate that people are currently marching toward Azadi square (#1).

Technical faculty of Tehran University students gather

A number of students from the Technical faculty of the University of Tehran have gathered in front of the gates of the university. The campus is filled with police and security forces. A large group is moving from Ferdowsi Square to Enqelab Square and their numbers are increasing by the minute.

Protesters beaten, but continue to move

The people’s protest gatherings have formed in various parts of Azadi and Enqelab avenues and the nearby streets. People have been beaten on Enqelab Avenue in Tehran but the people still continue to move toward Azadi Square. Mobile phones are cut in the central part of the city. Tear gas has also been used at the Vali-Asr and Azadi Square intersections. There are a lot of security and police forces present. In the southern part of the city, next to Al-Mahdi park, there are plainclothes forces stationed on 16 Azar Street. There have been clashes and people have been beaten by plainclothes forced stationed under College bridge.

Security forces clash with demonstrators in Shiraz and Isfahan

According to eyewitness reports, demonstrators have gathered in Namazi Square in Shiraz chanting “You Honorable Iranian. Support, Support”. Clashes between security forces and demonstrators has erupted.

A large crowd has also gathered in Isfahan’s Enghelab Square. There have been reports of clashes between the security forces and demonstrators. More news to come.

Heavy clashes between protesters and security forces in Tehran

Human Rights and Democracy Activists in Iran- Heavy clashes continue between people and the security forces around Enghelab Square (#9 on the map in link below).

Around 4:15pm Tehran time, Enghelab Square and the area surrounding the University of Tehran (#5) are filled with crowds of people chanting “Death to Dictator” while continue their path to Azadi (Freedom) Square (#1).

Around 4:20pm, security forces charged toward the crowd and heavy clashes erupted between people and the forces who attacked protesters with batons. Some protesters have been injured as a result. The forces tried unsuccessfully to break and disperse the crowd. The security forces have a strong presence in the area, but the protestors are practically controlling the Azadi Street (#11)
